A nitrocellulose-based nail varnish contains at least one synthetic organic polymer having chromophoric groups chemically attached thereto, preferably in amount of 0À5-6À0% by weight. The polymer may be produced by reaction of an organic dyestuff containing amino or hydroxy groups with a polymer having groups reactive therewith. Exemplified polymers are polyitaconic anhydride and copolymers of methylvinyl ether/butyl maleate, methyl methacrylate / maleic anhydride, ethylene /maleic anhydride, methylvinyl ether / maleic anhydride and vinyl acetate / vinyl pyrrolidone / N-allyl-chloracetamide, to which polymers may be attached, by amidification on their acid groups, dyes of the azo, anthraquinone or nitro type, and which have substituent amino groups. Also used is an inherently coloured copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and 1-N-(acryloylaminopropyl) amino anthraquinone. Coloured polymers as above are made by: (1) attaching to the acid groups of methylvinyl ether / butyl maleate copolymer via amidification, one of the dyestuffs 1-N-(γ-aminopropyl)- amino anthraquinone, 4-(N-ethyl-N-#-aminoethyl) amino - 41 - nitro - azobenzene, 2 - amino - 1 - N - (# - aminoethyl) amino - 4 - nitrobenzene, or 1 - N - (# - aminoethyl) amino- 4 - methoxy - 2 - nitrobenzene; (2) forming a semi-amide-semi-ester polymer by condensing on to methylvinyl ether/butyl maleate copolymer under reflux in ethanol, either 1-N-(γ- aminopropyl) amino anthraquinone or 2-(41- [N - ethyl - N - aminoethyl amino] - benzeneazo)- benzthiazole.
