A roller skate (10) of the in-line wheel type having wheels (24, 26, 46) mounted for rotation in a normal skating direction (i.e., about a transverse axis (30, 32), perpendicular to the skating direction) and wherein at least one wheel is mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis (44), parallel to the skating direction. An internal brake (74, 86, 96) is provided to progressively retard the wheel rotation about the longitudinal axis to provide a braking mechanism so the skater can stop by executing a sharp side-wise turn, also known as a "hockey stop".
