Pipeline system for conveying heat incorporating leakage detection

The pipeline system has a thermal insulation layer (3) between an inner pipe (1) for conveying the heat transfer medium and a relatively spaced outer pipe (2). A sensor line (4), for detecting and locating leakages, is embedded in the thermal insulation material. The sensor line is made of an alloy with a low temp. coefficient which is approx. constant e.g. a copper-nickel alloy, with an electrical resistance which is sufficiently low to allow leakage location by measuring the propagation time of a reflected pulse fed along the sensor line, but sufficiently large to allow leakage detection via a resistance measurement.
