Image acquisition system for automatic reading of postal addresses

The system low resolution colour camera 10 provides an image for determining the position of an address block. The high resolution black and white camera 11 provides an image used to read the located address block. Both cameras are mounted on a pivotted support. The address area is illuminated by a unit 16 supplied through a fibre optic cable 18. It provides a narrow illumination band 8 on the address. The object,eg letter, is fed past the cameras at a controlled rate.
