Image sequences are analyzed and, with optional human assistance, computer calculated shape or motion data (2D or 3D) is extracted (1001). That data is applied to distort pairs of source frames (1002) and, along with cross-dissolving between distorted pairs, intermediate image frames are thereby produced (1003). The resulting higher-frame rate signal consists of original and intermediate frames with each composed and positioned appropriately in time, and with each comprising unique visual information. Improved visual quality or, alternately, data reduction is thereby achieved. In the latter case, the vacated bandwidth may be used for: additional resolution or definition (in both directions or in bit-depth); additional image area (e.g. HDTV, widescreen or "letterbox" side-strips); 3D information in the form of a second image, or from which two images can be created by combination with the first; interactive or game data; hyper- or multimedia data; image segmentation data showing areas of motion or where different algorithms are to be applied; or the interleaving of several program channels.
