The belt conveyor has a variable length and is used in a horizontal mineshaft. The unused belt length is stored separately from the support beams (10) which are required when the length of the conveyor is extended. The support frame (1) for the return belt is suspended on fixed chains. The movable beams (10) and the support rollers (12) for the load-carrying belt section are suspended from an overhead beam by roller boxes (21). As the beam sections are pulled out from their storage location, the conveyor belt is released from storage in order to extend the overall conveyor length.
