A lock apparatus (10) selectively locks and unlocks a rotatable shaft (12) from rotation. A brake disc (20) is formed with opposed lock surfaces (32, 34). First and second lock rings (100, 102) rotatably mounted on first and second bearing members (54, 56) are alternatingly moved by rotation along spaced projections on the adjacent first and second bearing members (54, 56) into locking engagement with the lock surfaces (32, 34) on the brake disc (20) and away from the brake disc (20) to an unlocked position. An outer member (58) of each of the bearing members (54, 56) is held in a fixed position by engagement with first and second end caps (40, 124) mounted on the brake disc (20). An inner bearing member (60) is axially movable with respect to the outer bearing member (58) to bring bearings (62) disposed in outer and inner races (74, 88) on the outer and inner bearing members (58, 60) into contact with thrust faces (75, 89) on the outer and inner members (58, 60) as axial force is imposed on the rotatable shaft (12) to enable rotation of the shaft (12).
