Prepn. of alkylbenzenes of formula (I) comprises gas or liquid phase reaction of nonaromatic monocyclic hydrocarbons (II) or bicyclic cpds. (III) in the presence of mol. sieve catalysts obtd. by doping mol. sieve catalysts in the non-acidic form with noble and/or lanthanide metals. (II) and (III) have a 6-membered ring, whilst the second ring of (III) may contain O atom(s), and the cpds. may have up to four 1-12 C alkyl, 1-10 C alkylidene and/or 1-10 C alkenyl substits. R1 = 1-12 C alkyl; R2-R4 = = H or 1-12 C alkyl.
