An apparatus and method for tightening and crimping a surgical wire (202) used for orthopedic purposes, includes a pair of operating handles (12, 14) which are biased apart and which operate a pair of opposed jaws (18, 20) to which they are connected. Disposed on opposite sides of the operating handles are a pair of capstans (94, 95). The jaws (18, 20) are adapted to hold a crimp member (200) therein without deforming it while opposite ends of a length of wire (202) are passed through the crimping member (200) in opposite directions. Each end of the wire (202) is wrapped about an associated capstan (94, 95). A ratchet handle (16) simultaneously rotates both capstans (94, 95) to wrap the opposite ends of the wire (202). Once the desired traction force has been achieved, the jaws (18, 20) are further activated to crimp the crimp member (200). A ring shaped crimp member (200) is also disclosed which has a central opening (201) extending along the axis thereof and two parallel channels (203), one channel being disposed on either side of the central opening.
