A procedure for controlling an IC engine burning a fuel-gas such as natural gas, uses a device controlling the fuel delivery to the engine from the fuel tank. At intervals in time, depending on the composition of the fuel in the tank, a pilot signal is formed and stored in the control device (9). This signal is incorporated into at least the formation of the position signal for the pressure regulator, fuel distributor and injectors (5 to 7). When the fuel tank (2) is filled, the fuel composition is determined, also taking into account the remanent gases in the control device before the tank is filled. The semiconductor sensor (15) used determines the methane number of the fuel.
