Optical fiber non-reciprocal phase shifters and optical isolators using them

The optical fibre non-reciprocal phase shifting device comprises a length of optical fibre having a core and a cladding and a longitudinal direction for light propagation. A magnet for applying a magnetic field to the optical fibre in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction; the longitudinal direction and the direction of the magnetic field defining a plane. The core is asymmetric with respect to the plane for producing a non-reciprocal phase shift in light propagating through the fibre.
