The novel method is intended to improve the motion estimation in moving picture sequences. 2.2 Using an additional filter which causes a raster shift in the original raster, the search area is filtered in a first method step and the match block is filtered in a second method step according to the invention. This is followed by the actual matching process in the usual manner. 2.3 The method according to the invention is used particularly in the coding of picture sequences for the picture transmission from HDTV to videotelephony, in the interactive multimedia area or for a high-quality standards conversion for moving-picture scenes.
