<p>An arm 14 carrying a probe 18 is movable axially (arrows 38) in and out of a housing 10, under the action of a hydraulic ram 26. In an extended, operative position, kinematic elements 58 on a collar 32 engage with further kinematic elements on an end plate 12, to precisely define the operative position of the arm. A coupling mechanism 30 between the arm 14 and the ram 26 decouples the arm from the ram in the operative position, so as not to interfere with the kinematic elements. This coupling mechanism contains a spring which provides a repeatable biasing force to the kinematic elements in the operative position. The movement of the arm is guided by pins 34 in slots 36,40,46,48,50, which can optionally provide swivelling of the probe 18 as it approaches the operative position. <IMAGE></p> |
