Catalytic compsn. comprises a non-aq. solvent, liq. below 150 degrees C, contg. mainly a quat. ammonium and/or phosphonium salt of formula Q<+>A<->, where Q<+> = quat.'NH4 and/or PH4 and A<-> = anion, the compsn. also contg. a transition metal cpd. of gp. 8, 9, or 10. Also claimed, is the use of the compsns. in hydrogenation reactions.
