PURPOSE: To obtain an optical coupler with which the execution of coupling of light to an optical waveguide element based on the principle of a prism coupler having allowability to the wavelength change of coupling efficiency is made possible and which is of a type thinner than the conventional prism couplers, has excellent integratability, facilitate the production thereof and has excellent mass productivity. CONSTITUTION: An optical waveguide 6 is composed of a substrate 5, a first dielectric layer 4 which is formed on this substrate 5, a second dielectric layer 3 which is formed on this first dielectric layer 4 and has the refractive index lower than the refractive index of the first dielectric layer 4 and a third dielectric layer 2 which is formed on part of the second dielectric layer 3 and has the same refractive index as the refractive index of the second dielectric layer 3. A material having the refractive index higher than the refractive indices of the respective dielectric layers is so molded as to cover the boundary between the part where the third dielectric layer 2 exists and the part where the third dielectric layer 2 does not exist, by which a light introducing part 1 for introducing incident light by the optical coupling principle of the prism is formed on the optical waveguide 6. |
