PURPOSE: To obtain a granular activated carbon excellent in abrasion resistance in handling by granulating and forming an impregnated and kneaded material of a carbonaceous raw material with a chemical activating agent in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol and baking the formed material. CONSTITUTION: In this method for producing activated carbon by baking a granulated material obtained by granulating and forming a kneaded material obtained by impregnating and kneading a carbonaceous raw material capable of being activated with a chemical with a chemical activator, granulation and forming are carried out in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol to provide the objective granular activated carbon. The activated carbon has 600-3000m<2> /g specific surface area measured by liquid nitrogen method/S-BET method (multipoint method) and <=1.5% powdering ratio by paint conditioner examination method. For example, zinc chloride, calcium chloride, caustic soda or phosphoric acid is preferably used as the chemical activator. Glycerol is especially preferably used as the polyhydric alcohol. The mixed ratio of the polyhydric alcohol used based on the carbonaceous raw material is 1-50wt.%, preferably 3-15wt.%, based on the dried solid. |
