PURPOSE: To provide an electrolyte for driving an electrolytic capacitor, having a stable characteristics in a wide temperature region, which can constitute a capacitor having a long life and high reliability and allowing use even at a higher voltage than in a prior art. CONSTITUTION: 2,3-dihydroxy benzoic acid tetramethyl ammonium, 2,4-dihydroxy benzoic tetramethyl ammonium, 2,5-dihydroxy benzoic tetraethyl ammonium, 2,6-dihydroxy benzoic acid tetramethyl ammonium, 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic tetraethyl ammonium or 3,5-dihydroxy benzoic acid tetramethyl ammonium are solved as solutes into a solvent consisting mainly ofγ-butylolactone. Nitrophenol, nitrobenzoic acid, nitroacetophenon or nitroaniline are added as additives.
