The invention describes a process and an apparatus for producing steel from liquid pig iron 6 and a solid iron carrier, in particular scrap iron 10, in which the solid iron carrier is preheated by means of the waste gases 15 formed in the blowing of the liquid pig iron 6 before the solid iron carrier is melted and mixed with the blown pig iron. To ensure advantageous utilization of heat, it is proposed that the liquid pig iron 6 be blown in a manner known per se by spray blowing and that the preheated iron carrier be melted by the spray flame 8 formed during spray blowing and directed against the iron carrier.
