Paper is sized with a composition comprising amylose or an amylose derivative, defined as derivatives of amylose which dissolve in water or aqueous alkali at temperatures of 150 DEG C. or less, and polyvinyl alcohol. The amylose component may comprise a hydroxy-propyl or hydroxy-ethyl ether of amylose, amylose acetate, or the separated fraction of whole starch, and may have an amylopectin content of less than 20 per cent by weight. The composition may be applied as an aqueous dispersion using a roll, air knife, Champion knife, doctor knife, or trailing blade coater, size press or spray applicator. The term "paper" is defined as including paper of all varities whether coated or uncoated e.g. paper board, polyethylene coated paper, and paper sized with clay-alkaline hypochlorite oxidized starch composition.ALSO:Paper is provided on at least one surface with a coating comprising amylose or an amylose derivative, defined as derivatives of amylose which dissolve in water or aqueous alkali at temperatures of 150 DEG C. or less, and polyvinyl alcohol. The coating may be pinhole free, smooth and grease-resistant and may be applied as an aqueous dispersion using a roll, air knife, Champion knife, doctor knife, or trailing blade coater, size press or spray applicator.
