The process involves measurement of the voltage between the terminals of the alternator (3) and its network of loads (6) in parallel with the battery (2) and its loads (1). A reference voltage for the alternator is calculated from its speed and temperature. The measured voltage is compared with the calculated reference, and when it falls short of the reference value a variable resistance (R) connected between the alternator and battery is adjusted by a controller (5). The measurement may be made with a low-pass filter whose characteristics are a function of the selected sensitivity.
