A papermaking felt (26) of the invention contains at least one substrate web (35/36) having a fuse-bonded joint (90) extending across the width of the felt. The joint (90) is formed by superposing, onto each other, end portions (66,68) of a flat-woven substrate web element (42), with the end portions (66,68) extending away from the ends (70,72) in a common direction, and concurrently severing the ends from the end portions, and fuse bonding the end portions to each other, along a common cut line. When the joint (90) is "opened out", the now endless closed loop web (35) exhibits a peak (100) in one surface and a valley (104) in the opposite surface. The web (35) is thereafter provided with a batt (38,40) of fibrous material on at least the paper-making surface (28) of the web; in this surface is the valley (104) which is almost imperceptible, and effectively no trace of which is discernible in paper made using the felt (26).

|
