[Also in Divisions D1, H1 and H5] An immersion heater (Fig. 6, not shown) is made by forming a layer of unsaturated polyester resin on the surface of each of two glass plates treated with a release agent, spraying the surfaces of the resinous layers with styrene to remove bubbles and allowing the layers to gel. Styrene is then applied to a heating cloth comprising a heating wire woven together with synthetic fibre warps and wefts, and held between two sheets of PVC with their edges attached to one another. The heating cloth is then placed on one of the gelled polyester layers. A small amount of the polyester is applied to the cloth followed by styrene. The second glass plate is then placed with its gelled polyester layer in contact with the heating cloth and the stack is left under 1 kg./om.<SP>2</SP> until the resin has gelled when the stack is heated to 60-80‹ C. After cooling the glass plates are removed from the hardened laminated heater. Another heater which is transparent is similarly made except that the heater cloth is made from glass-fibre yarns and the PVC sheets are omitted. Spaced parallel spacer strips may be formed on the surface of the heater (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown). The heating wire may be of stainless steel, a carbon fibre or a yarn having carbon on its surface.</p> |
