A grit removal device employs the natural tendency of the inside edge of a water flow to silt up after a curve. A constant flow channel of length to width ratio 10:1 is curved horizontally through 45 deg., with a bend radius to width ratio 3:1. Grit which pases to the low velocity inside curve is collected by a sedimentation chamber. Pref. a constant flow channel (27) of rectangular cross-section has a length to width ratio of at least 10:1. Water level within the channel is maintained constant by an upstream flume. The channel (27) is curved horizontally through 45 deg., maintaining its cross section, with a bend ratio to width ratio of 3:1. Two straight sides collection ports (29) are positioned immediately after the curve on the inside wall of the channel. These are at the lowest level of the channel's rectangular section to retain grit which falls at the lower velocity on the inside of the curve. Behind the ports and attached to the channel is a collection chamber from which the grit is allowed to fall.
|
