Within a computing system, an input/output processor (43;113) provides resources shared by several input/output interfaces (41,42;111,112). The computing system includes both a host bus (30;100) and an input/output bus (40;110). One or more host processors (31,32;101,102) are connected to the host bus (30;100). A bus bridge (34;104) connects the input/output bus (40;110) to the host bus. The bus bridge (34;104) is used for transferring information between the host bus (30;100) and the input/output bus (40;110). A first input/output interface (41;111) provides an interface between a first external input/output system (45) and the input/output bus (40;110). A second input/output interface (42;112) provides an interface between a second external input/output system (47) and the input/output bus (40;110). An input/output processor (43;113), also connected to the input/output bus (40;110), includes an embedded processor (44;124) connected to a local memory (45;125). The input/output processor (43;113) controls data transactions through the first input/output interface (41;111) and controls data transactions through the second input/output interface (42;112). The local memory (45;125) provides temporary storage for data transactions through the first input/output interface (41;111) and for data transactions through the second input/output interface (42;112). <IMAGE> |
