摘要 The invention comprises compounds of the formula Mx(B6H6)y in which M is a cation, x and y are 1,2 or 3, and 2y equals the value of x multiplied by the valency of M. M may be an ammonium, sulphonium or phosphonium radical substituted by 1-4 organic substituents having up to 8 C atoms. Specified compounds include [(CH3)4N]2B6H6. The compounds may be prepared by adding a conc. aq. solu. of an H2O-soluble salt of the appropriate cation, e.g. [(CH3)4N]Cl, to an alkali metal hexaboro-hydride, e.g. Na2B6H6, which may be prepared by the reaction of an alkali metal borohydride with diborane in a polyglycol ether solvent (see Division C1).ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula Mx(B6H6)y in which M is a cation, and y are 1, 2 or 3, and 2y equals the value of x multiplied by the valency of M. M may be an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, a heavy metal (atomic number at least 47), an ammonium radical, an ammonium, sulphonium or phosphonium radical substituted by 1-4 organic substituents having up to 8 C atoms, or a hexammonium complex of Cr or Co. Examples refer to the preparation of Na2B6H6, K2B6H6, Cs2B6H6, CaB6H6, Tl2B6H6, PbB6H6, (NH4)2-B6H6, [(CH3)4N]2B6H6 and Ag2B6H6. Alkali metal hexaborohydrides may be prepared by reacting, at a temperature above 100 DEG C., an alkali metal borohydride e.g. NaBH4, with diborane in the presence of a polyglycol ether solvent, e.g. a di-alkyl ether of diethylene or triethylene glycol. The reaction may be carried out at 100-230 DEG C. in the presence of a polyglycol ether having a b.p. of at least 100 DEG C. 0.5-1.5 moles of diborane may be added per mole of alkali metal borohydride dissolved in the ether. The diborane may be diluted with a gas inert to the reactants, e.g. N2. Alkaline earth metal-, heavy metal- and substituted or unsubstituted ammonium-hexaborohydrides may be prepared by adding an alkali metal hexaborohydride, e.g. as prepared above, or tetramethylammonium hexaborohydride to a conc. aq. soln. of a salt of the appropriate cation.ALSO:A herbicide comprises the compound Mx (B6H6)y where M is a cation, x and y are 1, 2 and 3, and 2y equals the value of x multiplied by the valency of M. M may be an alkali metal, an alkine earth metal, a heavy metal (at. no. at least 47), an ammonium radical, an ammonium, sulphonium or phosphonium radical substituted by 1-4 organic groups containing up to 8C atoms, or a hexammonium Cr or Co complex. A specified herbicidal composition consists of an aqueous solution of [(CH3)4N]2B6H6 applied at the rate of 36 lbs. per acre.
