PURPOSE: To obtain a compound in a high purity, useful as a raw material, etc., of a flame retardant polycarbonate and having less coloration by the addition reaction of an alkylene oxide with halogenated bisphenols in the presence of a specific organic solvent, a catalyst and water. CONSTITUTION: This alkylene oxide adduct of halogenated bisphenols is obtained by an addition reaction of (A) halogenated bisphenols with (B) a 2-4C alkylene oxide in the presence of (C) 10-50 pts.wt. organic solvent not having an active hydrogen in its molecule based on A+B=100 pts.wt., (D) 0.005-5 pts.wt. catalyst of a compound of formula I (R<3> to R<6> are each a 1-8C alkyl, an aryl, an aralkyl or a cycloalkyl; X is Cl or Br) and (E) 0.5-3 pts.wt. water to obtain a compound of formula II (R<1> , R<2> are each H or methyl; n is 2-4). |
