PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a gear further improved in efficiency and a cost-effect ratio. SOLUTION: In this method of manufacturing a gear 10 utilized as a side gear of a vehicle differential, a first billet formed of low carbon steel is selected to produce an annular gear wheel 12 from the first billet, and a second billet formed of low carbon steel is selected to produce an annular gear hub 14 from the second billet. The gear wheel 12 is bonded to the gear hub 14. The gear wheel 12 and the gear hub 14 are respectively forged, and the gear hub 14 and the gear wheel 12 are subjected to near net forming or net forming. The step of jointing is accomplished by laser welding or by applying adhesives to the mating surfaces of the gear hub 14 and wheel 12. The gear hub 14 and the gear wheel 12 are produced using the billets made of different low carbon steel from each other. |
