PURPOSE: To prevent a reading means from being stained by a recovery unit by making the moving range of a moving means narrower than the range when a recording means is mounted, when the moving means is mounted with the reading means. CONSTITUTION: The exchange of a recording head and a reading head 1 is done at a standard position H with a carriage moved by a head exchange command. A resistance chip is buried in the reading head 1, and a controller reads ID of the resistance chip and recognizes that the reading head is mounted. By the recognition, a carriage 2 is controlled not to enter the recording recovery unit 31 side from the standard position by position detection signals from a standard position detection sensor and an encoder 5. Therefore, the carriage 2 does not move to a recovery position R even when recording data are input. When a reading command is input, paper is fed in an amount corresponding to the reading width of the reading head 1, and reading is done by scanning on a transfer unit in each line. |
