Cooling air is injected into the jacket transverse to the strip advance direction. Preferably the air streams are parallel to the plane of the strip, or around the strip in alternatingly varying directions. A controllable marginal portion of the strip is excluded from the action of the cooling air. Annealing jacket is described.
