The variator is formed by an assembly of three prisms (1-3) of the same glass and precisely symmetrical w.r.t. their median plane perpendicular to the optical axis. The central prism is moved by actuators for displacement w.r.t. exterior prisms in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis. The assembly of the three prisms is equivalent to a plate with parallel faces normal to the optical axis which does not cause deviation of the light beam. Movement of the central prism causes misalignment of the light transmitting surfaces.
