Spindle, esp. for multi-spindle two-for-one twister, has spool carrier with hollow hub and, below it, a rotor where thread runs axially in the hub, radially outwards and, after rotor exit, to an over- carrier centring point while forming a thread balloon (FB) round the carrier. An in-hub capsular thread brake adjusts from central control appts. and comprises a mandrel supported between two axially opposed brake rings in cylindrical case, one ring moving axially to achieve variable braking force. In the case (1.3) a non-rotating adjusting tube (9) moves axially, encloses at least one ring (6.1) and at its top couples positively with one ring (5.1) to exert force axially. Its screwed lower end (9.2) is introduced into the sub-carrier (1) region and a rotating but axially immovable transmission piece (11) with an actuator arm (12) screws on the tube. The arm outer end carries a first permanent magnet (13) with external face just inside the FB-enclosed region while an FB-external radially located second magnet (14), with oppositely polarised inner face, moves along a circular sector within a predetermined angular range about the spindle axis being controlled centrally via a connecting mechanical actuator.
