The control operates on the individual brushless DC motors (2.1-2.N) driving the cylinders (1.1-1.N) in synchronism. High-resolution incremental encoders (3.1-3.N) supply signals to the controller (6) in conjunction with outputs from encoders (4.1-4.N) of lower resolution coupled directly to the motors. The axes of the motors are adjusted by individual drive controls (5.1-5.N) to maintain the same relative angular positions. When any component of a drive unit fails, all other drive units are run down to standstill in synchronism according to a temporal function provided for the defective unit and reproduced by the control signal.
