A method for removing an encased structural component containing or shedding gas-permeable mineral fibres, esp. the thermal insulation for a container or tank, entails injecting steam through a hole or holes in the cover, which is then removed before finally removing the structural component. Pref. the steam injection holes are placed at intervals between 1 and 2, pref. at about 1.5, metres. Where the component is a vertical structure steam is injected into the upper cover holes first and each for a period of between 5 and 30, pref. about 10 minutes. When dismantling the cover, individual parts only are removed, a fibre binding substance is applied to the exposed structural component and the dismantling continued.
