Low temp. combustion of polymer waste initiated at 280-330 degrees C and maintained in this range by the heat of combustion is carried out in an oxidising atmos., pref. of oxygen-enriched air, passed through in minimum quantity. The prods. are isolated at the reactor outlet as quickly as possible. Suitable equipment consists of a sloping reactor with means for melting the polymer waste, continuous feeding of oxygen-enriched air, regulating the temp. in the reactor and isolating the prods. Used for treatment of polypropylene and for polyethylene scraps, e.g., from domestic refuse, opt. mixed with polystyrene and/or up to 5% PVC, to obtain 3-15(7-10)C ketone mixts., esp. methyl ketones.
