Prepn. of 2-imino-4-oxo-5-phenyloxazolidine (I) and/or its tautomer comprises reaction of a mandelic acid ester with an alkali or alkaline earth hydrogen cyanamide in a molar ratio of 1:2-1:0.5 (esp. 1:1.25-1:1) at 10-150 deg C, followed by acidification of the mixt. or the metal salts isolated from it at -30 to 150 deg C (esp. 10-80 deg C) so that the pH value is 2-10 (esp. 3-6).
