Vertical columns etc. (2) are aligned by insertion of small plates (10) of ductile material in washer fashion between the column and its base (12). The plates are pref. of a ductile material partic. plastic, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene. When the column is bolted (14) to the base, it can be aligned by tightening the bolts appropriately, deforming the small plates.
