To wind a yarn in a loose winding, with a nominal guide reciprocating frequency, the frequency is decelerated steadily or in steps on entry into a danger zone and then abruptly increased above the nominal value within the danger zone. The frequency is steadily reduced, or by steps, so that on emerging from the danger zone the frequency takes up the nominal value. Pref. the reciprocating frequency change is such that the winding ratios before the jump are less than the ratio KE on entry into the danger zone and, after the jump, are larger than the ratio KA on emerging from the danger zone, or before the jump they can match the entry conditions and, after the jump, match the exit rate. The abrupt jump is at about the centre of the danger zone. On moving through overlapping danger zones of neighbouring patterns, the reciprocating frequency is altered at the overlap continuously between the exit from the first zone to the entry to the second zone, in a jump, giving an abrupt increase at the centre of the total overlapping zones, to take up the nominal frequency value on leaving the second zone.
