The present invention is directed to methods of detoxifying water containing phosphonium salt based compounds. The methods comprise adding to an aqueous system containing phosphonium salt based compounds a sufficient quantity of a swelling type natural or synthetic clay to neutralize the toxicity associated with phosphonium salt based compounds to aquatic organisms.
