In the manufacture of organic isocyanates by continuously reacting an excess of phosgene with an amine to yield carbamyl chloride which is then converted into an isocyanate at a higher temperature, the conversion of the carbamyl chloride into isocyanate is effected under a pressure of at least 10 kg. per sq. cm. The initial conversion of the phosgene and amine into carbamyl chloride may be effected under the same pressure, which may be up to 50 kg. per sq. cm. The phosgene-amine reaction may be effected at 40-120‹ C., particularly 80-115‹ C., and the decomposition of the carbamyl chloride may be effected at 120- 180‹ C., particularly 130-145‹ C. A diluent may be present, and a number of suitable diluents are specified. Two constructions of apparatus are described, and examples are given describing the manufacture of tolylene diisocyanate, diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate and phenyl isocyanate. |
