Novel 2,4-thiazolidinedione or oxazolidinedione derivatives represented by general formula (I) which exhibit excellent effects as a hypoglycemic agent, wherein R<1> represents phenyl, naphthyl, cycloalkyl or a heterocycle optionally having substituents selected from among alkyl, alkoxy, halogeno, hydroxy, halogenoalkyl, halogenoalkoxy, nitro, amino, phenyl, thienyl, furyl, thiazolyl and pyridyl; V represents CH or CH2; W represents O or S; Y represents CH or N; Z represents O, S, SO, SO2 or NR<2> (wherein R<2> represents H, alkyl, aralkyl or acyl); X represents O, S, CO, CH2, NR<3>, NR<4>CO or CONR<5> (wherein R<3>, R<4> and R<5> independently represent each H or alkyl); m and n independently represent each an integer of 0 to 4; and the symbol - - - represents a single or double bond.
