The invention relates to a plant and a method for casting by means of vacuum of metals and metal alloys melting at a relatively low temperature, such as aluminium alloys, zinc alloys, etc., whereby the melted metal pours out of a melting pot by means of the vacuum along a lifting channel 34 up into a gas permeable mould 35 of a ceramic material which is provided at the inside of a gastight mantle 25 and supported by a supporting material 38 of a flowable material between the inside of the mantle and the outside of the mould. Means 15-18 for providing vacuum at the inside of the mantle are connected to the upper end of the mantle. The mantle 25 consists of an elastic, gastight material, whereby the provision of vacuum at the inside of the mantle provides an efficient packing of the supporting material 38 by means of the deflection of the mantle 25. <IMAGE>
