The printer has a print head (11) which is carried by a carriage (10) which is movable in the direction of writing/printing along a line. The head has an optical device (20) which determines at the same time the carriage position, the presence or absence of paper, and the position of a sheet (15) of paper engaged in the printer. The optical device has an emitter of electromagnetic radiation and a receiver for detecting the beam. The emitter and the detector are arranged to cooperate with the sheet of paper and at least a geometric element (26,27) which enables defining the position of the carriage. The optical device has a reflection sensor (20) located in a reflective zone which defines the carriage position and the sheet position.
