PURPOSE: To provide a discharge lamp device or liquid crystal display device, which can be lighted with a low power source voltage, dispenses with a high withstand voltage switching device, and has a satisfactory afterglow of rare gas. CONSTITUTION: A discharge lamp 1 contains a rare gas sealed therein, and has a pair of cold-cathode type electrodes 2a, 2b and a phosphor layer 3. A switching device 6 is connected, for example, in series to a primary winding N1 so as to make the secondary winding of a step-up transformer output a pulse voltage at OFF. A switching means 7 turns ON/OFF the switching device 6 at a frequency of 30-80kHz. A ballast means 8 is formed of, for example, a capacitor provided on the secondary side of the step-up transformer. A rectifying means 9 has the reverse polarity to the pulse voltage supplied to the discharge lamp 1, and is provided in parallel to the discharge lamp 1. A lighting device 10 supplies a pulse voltage with ON-duty of 2-50% and ON-time of 0.25-16.7msec. between the electrodes 2a, 2b of the discharge lamp 1. |
