PURPOSE: To obtain appropriate sensor data by integrating auxiliary light once without depending on the luminance or the distance of a subject and to reduce a time lag by decreasing the number of times of emitting the auxiliary light. CONSTITUTION: In this focus detector, a subject image is divided into two images and information related to the focusing state of a photographing lens or the distance to the subject is detected based on the two images; and the focus detector is provided with a stroboscopic unit 16 pulsatively projecting the detection auxiliary light of variable quantity to the subject when the subject is under a specified condition, an AFIC 112 receiving plural subject images obtained by respectively forming plural subject luminous fluxes into the images and outputting an image signal corresponding to the respective images and a monitor signal showing an accumulation level from starting accumulation, and a CPU 111 receiving the monitor signal, obtaining a level difference between the accumulation level just after finishing pulsative light emission by the unit 16 once and a proper accumulation level, and setting the light quantity of the next pulsative light emission by the unit 16 according to the level difference. |
