PURPOSE: To provide an image data compression/expansion device which can perform the fast extractive output and rotary output of a single area of an image without deteriorating the reduction effect of the memory capacity that is caused by compression of the image data. CONSTITUTION: The image data equivalent to one page is divided into plural rectangular blocks with the image data equivalent to (n×n) pixels defined as a single unit. A compression code is generated in each of divided rectangular blocks, and these compression codes are stored in a compression code buffer 57. At the same time, the address of the storage area occupied by every compression code in the buffer 57 is stored in a compression code table 58 in response to the number given to every rectangular block. In such a constitution of an image data compression/expansion device, only a desired compression code can be read out and expanded. Thus it is possible to perform the fast extractive output and rotary output of a single area of an image.
