PURPOSE: To provide an infrared communication equipment and its method by which one- or two-way communication can be made between the infrared communication equipment of a personal computer and a remote controller for household electrical appliance. CONSTITUTION: The protocol of a consumer remote controller is made emulatable by using the infrared communication equipment of a personal computer by adding a transmission mode switching circuit 52 for switching the transmission mode and a reception mode switching circuit 58 for switching the reception mode to the conventional IrDA supporting circuit for infrared communication and setting an UART 51 which controls serial communication to a state where the UART 51 can communicate with the remote controller.
