PURPOSE: To obtain a reflection type liquid crystal display device with which the compatibility of a bright color display with a bright white display is possible. CONSTITUTION: This reflection type liquid crystal display device is provided, successively from an incident light direction side, with a light diffusion layer 1, a liquid crystal layer 2 contg. dichromatic dyestuff, a quarter-wave plate 3, a cholesteric liquid crystal layer 4 of which the optical properties are changed by electric fields and a reflection plate 5. The liquid crystal layer 2 contg. the dichromatic dyestuff acts to absorb light or to allow the transmission of the light by a horizontal orientation state or perpendicular orientation state. The cholesteric liquid crystal layer 4 is capable of controlling the respective display colors including white with each of respective pixels when the selected reflection wavelength of the light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer is set by the change in the electric field. |
