The closure device (15) has a press-fitting (13) fitted to the open end of a pipeline (1) and a sealing piston carrier (25) with a sealing piston (45) projecting into the press-fitting. The sealing piston carrier is supported by a fixing sleeve (27), which fits radially over the press-fitting, with the sealing piston incorporating a venting tap (29) allowing the pipeline to be vented before the pressure testing.
