Coating of tio2 pigment by gas-phase and surface reactions

In a process for making pigment-grade TiO2 coated with a metal oxide, a thermally decomposable volatile titanium-containing precursor is introduced into a reactor. The titanium-containing precursor is thermally decomposed within the reactor to form TiO2 pigment particles. Subsequently, one or more thermally decomposable volatile metal-containing coating precursors are injected into the reactor. The one or more metal-containing coating precursors are reacted within the reactor to form a coating of the one or more metal oxides on the TiO2 pigment particles.
