<p>The present invention provides an apparatus (110) and method (300) for optimizing and testing a communication system (100). An optimization and testing processor is coupled to a base station system element (31) for generating optimization and testing messages containing system performance information. These messages are communicated to a standard mobile communication unit (80) having messaging capability and a field engineer using this mobile can view the messages for evaluating system performance. Additionally, the mobile communication unit transmits performance data back to the base station system element which is received and recorded by the optimization and testing processor in a suitable storage medium (124/126). The mobile communication unit generated data may also be incorporated into an optimization and testing message and communicated back to the mobile communication unit for evaluation by the field engineer.</p> |
